I looked across the meadows and marshes of Hewlett Bay, and watched the New York skyline fade, obscured, by billows of clouds, black smoke rising on the horizon, as towers fell on the city below.
A plane had crashed into the Twin Towers.
An accident? But, then a second plane hit.
An attack? Lies, rumors . . . An act of war? Unreality . . .
WAR abstract, impersonal, fought by soldiers in a foreign land. But, now the horror strikes my own backyard.
The Towers, beacons of America toppled. 3000 people dead, missing,
firefighters, police, office workers people from my neighborhood, alumni of my high school, people I knew, one of the firemen, my sons football coach, people I met, people I passed on the street, everyday people, gone!
War is now a very personal reality.

I've not yet attempted to write about 9/11. It is almost too enormous for words... enormous in it's entirety but also in very specific moments--- some of which you mentioned here. This is painfully relatable... I had the same kind of thoughts--- the terribly transition from thinking it an accident to realizing it was intentional when that second plane hit. And then... the stream of thoughts rushing forth in an effort to understand what it was all about..
You've presented a painful memory with quiet eloquence... the type of reflecting that could only come after some time has passed. Your ending is a horrid reality... sadly it is now, very very different. This piece absolutely does "hit home".
Well done...

It is amazing how many people this tragedy touched and changed. "War is now a very personal reality". This is the perfect ending for this piece. Brilliant and true in every way. |
